Obituary for Harbhajan Kaur Sandhu

In Loving Memory of our Mother, Grandmother (Bibi Ji), Great grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, Harbhajan Kaur Sandhu passed away peacefully in the arms of her beloved granddaughter Raveen Kaur Sekhon on Thursday, January 7, 2021.

Harbhajan was a devoted wife to the Late Pritam Singh Sandhu (Papa Ji), a loving mother of 5 children (Talwinder, Manjit, Balwinderjit, Rawinder, and Narinderpal), a proud grandmother of 14 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Harbhajan was born in Sath Chak Montgomery on February 1, 1937. During the partition in 1947, she was forced to leave the life she knew behind taking only what she could carry, where she settled in Jadli, India. During this journey, she lost both of her parents at a young age and was raised by her older sister along with her 2 brothers, where she flowered into the smart, independent, and beautiful woman that we all grew to know. Her relationship with her nieces and nephews (Mann and Thandi families) was a special bond. Even though they were far from her, they were always near and dear to her heart.

In 1952 she married Late Pritam Singh Sandhu and moved to the village of Selkiana, India where she gave birth to 5 beautiful children. In search of a better life for her children and from the support of her beloved brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Late Sohan Singh and Pritam Kaur Lalli she moved to Merritt, British Columbia on December 2, 1974. Her bond with her husband's nieces and nephews of the Lalli Family was also very special as they were loving, caring, and always willing to provide support, which she held close to her heart and later shared wonderful and heart-touching stories with her grandchildren.

After the loss of her husband 25 years ago, she moved to Toronto to start a new chapter in her life and devoted the remaining years of her life to raising her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and traveling between Toronto, Vancouver, and Sacramento to maintain strong connections with her family.

Mother is a big title to carry and she carried it well with Respect and Dignity being first and foremost. She taught us right from wrong, how to be strong and independent but most importantly how to love one another. Her legacy will live on in all of us and we will forever remember her for her warm touch, soft smile, and gentle eyes. Deeply loved by her family, she will be missed by all.

A private funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 16, 2021.
