Obituary for Naraine Datt

NORMAN NARAINE DATT (1942 – 2021)

Naraine “Norman” Datt, 1942 – 2021, teacher, poet, artist, and Realtor, was a popular and beloved Guyanese and a Canadian who loved humanity. He was born in Nabaclis, East Coast Demerara, Guyana in 1942 and moved with his family to Bush Lot, West Coast Berbice at age 10. He was one of a family of 9.
Norm was a brilliant student. He qualified as a Teacher with the Guyana Teachers’ Training College, where he met his future wife Chan. He first taught at Anna Regina Primary School in the Essequibo region and then taught at Bush Lot Primary School. In Bush Lot he was affectionately known as “Teacher Raj”. In Bush Lot he and Chan were teachers alongside each other, both highly regarded.
Norm went to New York in 1969, where he studied electronics. He then moved to Toronto in 1970, where he was joined that same year by his beloved wife Chan.
Norm, Chan, and their two sons, Sunil and Devin lived in Pape Avenue, Toronto, then Brimorton Drive, Scarborough, and thereafter in Rambleberry Avenue, Pickering.
In Toronto, Norm had a variety of occupations, finally settling into being a certified Realtor. He established his own Realty Office.
Norm was a gifted artist. One of his favourite paintings is of Kaieteur Falls. Norm also wrote beautiful poetry and published several volumes of poetry. He was a popular poet and author on-line. He had a poetry corner on line, on which he shared his poems.
Norm followed current affairs in Canada, Guyana, and the world. He often circulated articles and other materials for comments to a circle of friends.
Norm loved his immediate family: Chan, Sunil, Devin, Pat, and Kayley, as well as his extended family, including his siblings. He was much loved by the wider family. He was always the life of a party.
Norm had a zest for living. In his poem, “Like Rice Straws Bending”, he wrote:
“With the heavy rain drops; Almost touching the good earth; I looked on helplessly…; But the rains ceased; The straws shook themselves; I smiled in the sunlight; And I felt good and hearty”
WE WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER NORM, GOOD AND HEARTY. MAY HIS SOUL REST IN PEACE
