Obituary

God looked around his garden
And found an empty place
He then looked down upon the earth
And saw your tired face

He put his arms around you
And lifted you to rest
God's garden must be beautiful
He always takes the best

He saw your road is getting rough
And the hills were hard to climb
So he closed your weary eyes
And whispered, "Peace be Thine"

It broke our hearts to lose you
But you didn't go alone
A part of us went with you
The day God called you home

When we saw you sleeping
So calm and free of pain
We would not wish you back to earth
To suffer once again

It broke our hearts to lose you
But you didn't go alone
A part of us went with you
The day God called you home

You've left us precious memories
Your love will be our guide
You live on through your family
You're always by our side

It broke our hearts to lose you
But you didn't go alone
A part of us went with you
The day God called you home
A part of us went with you
The day God called you home

Its three weeks now and I still can’t believe or accept that you are gone, Der. I keep waiting for you to come home, for you to bend down and wrap your arms around me and give me that big hug and to say those words “Love You Mom”. Every time I hear a car coming into our street, I run to the window expecting to see you. Every morning I wake up, I want to go to your room to see that you are still sleeping and every night before I go to bed and you haven’t come home yet, I want to message you, telling you that dinner is waiting for you. None of this seems real, I just keep waiting and waiting..
Der, the day you were born, you were the greatest blessing for all of us - for me, for dad, for Mikey, for Mandy. You were our greatest love and brought so much joy into our lives. You were perfect in every way, our dear sweet son. You were part of that garland that completed our family, with Cris, Dmytro and your soon to be nephew – I so looked forward to our family growing. Today, that garland has been broken and we are so lost.
Der, as you grew up, your deep and unconditional love touched everyone that you met. You never judged anyone and every person you met has a story to tell about you - your compassion, your loyalty, your kind and gentleness, your simplicity and so many other words are used to describe you. In your 23 years, you touched more lives that most of us can ever hope to touch in our lifetime.
The overwhelming love and support we are receiving from families and friends is helping us through these harrowing times. We feel your hugs from everyone who has been reaching out to us. We want everyone to know what a perfect son, grandson, brother, brother-in-law, cousin, nephew and friend you were, Der. You lived life to the fullest and loved deeply. This legacy will be carried on by the countless many you left behind, the countless many whose lives are forever changed because of you.
Thank you for your hugs. Thank you for enduring it all. Thank you for being so understanding. Thank you for being you. Der, we love you with all our heart;
Until we meet again, Rest In Peace, our baby. You will forever live in our hearts.
Mom

Life is about seeing the good in everyone, even while living in a storm. That is the lesson my son, Derek Jeevesh Khelawan taught me.
It wasn’t the comfort he sought. He wasn’t waiting for the storm to pass, he lived in the storm. And now the Angels have called.

My son lived his life on his terms. He was not rebelling against anything or anyone. He was a free-spirit who loved everyone and lived in the present, and again, on his terms.

When he’d looked out of the clouds, he didn’t see the rags that others wear. He saw their humanity and their struggles. He wanted to live in their struggles too. He wasn’t afraid of the storm.

I have learned in the past weeks how genuine and strong he was. I have learned from his peers, friends, siblings, cousins, and acquaintances. He made friends so easily and was true to each and every one of them. He supported them, guided them and made them happy. He was not judgmental of anyone. He wasn’t faded by the storm. He saw the good in everyone.

Derek was 23 years old when he passed away. When big, burly Bradly came to our door and wept alone by himself, it was only then that I realized how much Derek touched people’s lives in only their brief moments together. When kind Shalini dreamt of him telling her that he was going home now; it was only then I knew that his storm was over.

Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass. It’s about learning to live in the storm. If he didn’t live in the storm, he may have remained dry and unfulfilled. He was fulfilled. It was his way, his purpose and when it was over, on his way back home, the clouds cleared, the sky opened for him, the beam of sunshine sparkled on the calm water, and the angels beckoned him in their arms.

I’m here today as a father with a broken heart. The loss of a child is something I could have never prepared for. Even during these past weeks, under insurmountable odds, I refused to prepare myself. I wasn’t ready. I'm still not ready. We had so many dreams and so many plans for the future. He did not die on his terms. Our lives will never be the same. But his storm was over and he had to go back home, taken by the angels.

Derek, I love you with all my heart; I am profoundly proud of you; you have taught me. I look forward to seeing you again when the time comes. I will continue to seek peace, as you wished. I, too shall face the storm ahead with courage and dignity. I, too shall look forward to a brighter day.
It's all good my son.
