Obituary of Mahant Patiram Ramroop
Mahant Patiram Ramroop was born on September 7, 1929 into a Kabir Panth family in Cottage Village, California, Trinidad. He was the son of the late Ramroop and Sonya Lutchman of Penal, Rock Road. He had 5 brothers and 3 sisters, a family of 10 – what a good time that was!
Growing up in Trinidad, he practiced his religion faithfully and was ordained as a Mahant (High Priest) by a priest from India.
At an early age, he had to relinquish his schooling to assist his family in providing for a better life for his other siblings. Living in the sugar belt, he industriously worked in the estate, cutting and fetching cane.
Mahant Patiram Ramroop was very fortunate to have an arranged marriage to the late, Sylvia Sookraj, on May 9, 1948 at the age of 19. Their love blossomed and they were blessed with their son, Baldath Pattiram, on January 13, 1955. Later in his life, he was further blessed with another son, the late Jagdesh Ramroop, born on March 11, 1961.
Mahant Patiram Ramroop toiled to give his family the best. He was blessed to be recruited with an American company as an Apprentice. This gave him a great opportunity and he was taught the skills to be a Bulldozer Operator. He used the skills he learned to train all of his brothers to become Bulldozer Operators as well, which extended to his nephews and other relatives. Mahant Patiram Ramroop remained in his profession in Trinidad, providing for his family until he decided to migrate to Canada in 1989.
In Canada, he worked odd jobs and continued to provide for his family. He retired in 1994 as a Janitor for Scarborough Town Centre.
Many of you may have seen him and experienced the aura he provided, you may have been attached to him in one way or another. You may also fondly remember him as “Sadhu Man” or “Pat”.
He did not give up his religion and continued as a Mahant in the Kabir Panth faith, until his death on March 23, 2020. He was instrumental in the formation of the Kabir Association of Toronto, of which he was a High Priest, a position he had to relinquish because of his age and failing health.
As a father, he was loving, compassionate and caring. He will lovingly be remembered for his dedication to his religion, for his generosity of spirit to the poor, the needy and the suffering, for his kindness, devotion, strength and everlasting love for his sons, daughter-in-laws, grandchildren, granddaughter-in-laws, grandson-in-laws, great grandchildren, friends, family, and everyone he met.
Mahant Patiram Ramroop performed his duties faithfully. He loved to share his love with everyone he came into contact with. He respected everyone and took every opportunity he had to bless any and every person that he could. May his soul be restful, knowing that his beloved, Sylvia, will be awaiting him with open arms.
