There are a lot of details to consider when planning a funeral service, and each detail carries some special importance. All aspects of the funeral service are crucial, including the viewing, prayers, eulogies, poems, etc. At ACVC Funeral Home, we strive to make sure your funeral service goes as smoothly as possible. Choosing a Clergy or Celebrant (Officiant)

One of the most critical steps in the funeral planning process is choosing a clergyman or celebrant to conduct the service. You will want to make sure the person is a good fit for the service you’re planning. Below are some factors to you need consider when selecting the person who will conduct a funeral service:

  • Role of the Celebrant/Clergy

The clergy member or celebrant (also known as officiant) is the master of ceremony at a funeral. He leads the prayer, gives a sermon, reads scriptures, and invites attendees to any event that may commence after the funeral service. In short, his role is to officiate and give structure to the funeral service.

  • Clergy or Celebrant

If you want to hold a funeral service in a church, the officiant will probably be a clergy member. If you are unsure who the person would be, you may want to ask the person in charge at your place of worship. When using a funeral home, you can still hire a clergy to officiate your service if that’s what you want.  Alternatively, you may ask a friend, relative, or the director at the funeral home to conduct the service.

  • Your Choice

The person you choose should be someone you are comfortable with. There’s no particular rule that states who should conduct a funeral service.  Instead of a clergy or funeral home director, you can ask a friend or family member to serve in the same capacity.  However, the officiant needs to reflect the values of the person who has died and his/her family.

  • Planning Ahead of Time

A lot of people decide to arrange for their own funeral in advance. If you would like, you can plan the details of your funeral service while you are still alive. Friends or family members may also discuss what they want before the time finally comes. The choice of celebrant may be part of the discussion.

Once you know the person you may want to choose, it is important to speak with him to be sure. A celebrant or clergy should be ready to answer the questions you have. If you want to use a friend or relative, make sure you discuss the aspects of the service that involves him.

Note that the officiant you choose will play a crucial role in the funeral service. So, make sure you’re comfortable with this person before making your choice. Our staff at ACVC Funeral Home will make sure you have the best funeral experience. Feel free to ask any questions you may have.
