Tips for Scattering Ashes at Sea

If your loved one spent a lot of time on the water, then spreading their ashes at sea can be a fitting way to honour their memory. Scattering ashes at sea, however, may come with unexpected complications.

At Ajax Crematorium & Visitation Centre, we understand you want to ensure everything proceeds perfectly. That's why we have compiled some tips to help you scatter your loved one's ashes in a body of running water.

Check Local Laws

Most laws and regulations regarding scattering ashes at sea are relatively lenient. That said, you’ll still need to keep some things in mind:

  • Don’t put anything into the water that isn’t biodegradable.
  • Spread the ashes as close to the surface of the water as possible.
  • Spread ashes away from buildings.
  • Don’t spread ashes in areas where people or animals swim.
  • If you want to spread ashes on a private beach, get permission first.

If you have any questions, contact local authorities, who can give you more insight.

Consider Where You Want To Scatter Ashes From

People may spread their family members’ ashes from three different locations:

  • The shoreline: Spreading from the shore comes with no extra costs. Moreover, you can choose when you want to scatter the ashes instead of working around a company’s schedule.

  • By boat: A boat can take you further out on the water, making scattering ashes at sea a little easier. In addition, it offers more privacy than scattering ashes on the shoreline.

  • By plane: Some may opt to spread ashes by dropping them out of a plane. This method offers similar advantages to spreading the ashes by boat, though you’ll want to ensure you work with professionals familiar with the process.

Check Weather Conditions

Poor weather can make it difficult to scatter your loved one’s ashes. High winds may cause problems, as they can blow the ashes back towards you. Check for ideal weather conditions beforehand, and stay upwind when you scatter the ashes.

Check the Ashes

Humidity can cause the ashes to clump together. If you don’t notice before you reach your destination, spreading them could become difficult. Don’t forget to check the ashes beforehand; if you notice clumps, break them up gently using a spoon.

Choose a Biodegradable Urn

When scattering ashes, the wind may change direction, bringing them back towards you. Those wanting to avoid this uncomfortable (and potentially traumatic) experience may choose a water urn – that is, an urn that floats on the water and can carry the ashes out to sea.

If you want to use an urn, you must ensure it will degrade eventually. Many crematoriums offer biodegradable options, so ask them for more information about this eco-friendly alternative.

Make the Scattering of Ashes Easier

Scattering ashes at sea can be a good way to find closure and put your loved one to rest. If you're looking for a designated spot, our scattering site in Pickering at the end of McKay Road on Lake Ontario provides a peaceful and respectful setting for releasing cremated remains into flowing water.

At Ajax Crematorium & Visitation Centre, we offer cremation services in Ajax to help you and your family and friends during this difficult time. Call 289-372-3300 to learn more.
