What Happens if You Cannot Afford a Funeral?

Puneet Aujla • July 19, 2022

We never know when a loved one will be taken from us. Death can be quite unexpected, and in today's economic downturn, it may be possible that you simply do not have the funds. to pay for a funeral. It is quite easy for a modest funeral to cost $10,000 or more, and this is not a sum that everyone will have immediate access to.

Social Services

Ontario Works provides social services for those needing assistance with covering basic funeral expenses. They may provide financial help for transferring the deceased from the place of death, cremation, a burial plot, an urn, or a casket. This service is provided on behalf of the deceased to make it easier for their family to say their final goodbye without breaking the bank. It’s important to recognize that bereavement should be respected and not add extra burden on loved ones financially. Ontario Works provides an essential support system so everyone can remember their loved ones with the respect and dignity they deserve.

Other Options

Make use of charitable organizations

Did you know that there are specialized organizations that aim to assist individuals in affording a funeral or memorial service for a loved one? Even though they often center on certain categories of deaths (children, parents, etc.), you never know what you could uncover in them.

The costs associated with the cremation are often covered by several charities that help with cremation. This might include the expense of having someone cremated as well as the cost of purchasing an urn or a cremation coffin. Because even the smallest contribution may make a difference, it is never a waste of time to ask for assistance when you are in need of it.

The Canadian Pension Plan

The Canadian Pension Plan (CPP) offers assistance to surviving family members. They can help by making a one-time donation to the estate in honor of the person who has passed away. The second benefit is a regular pension payment.

What It Includes The death benefit consists of a one-time payment to the estate in the amount of $2500.

Benefits under the CPP will be lost if an application for such benefits is not submitted within one year of the decedent's date of death.

Veterans in Canada

For qualifying veterans, the Last Post Fund, a charitable organization, offers financial aid to cover the costs of funeral and burial services, including the cost of a military tombstone. This assistance may help pay for burial and funeral services in Ajax.

In order to be eligible, the veteran must have satisfied both the military requirements and either the health or financial conditions.
