When Should a Funeral Take Place

Puneet Aujla • October 20, 2022

For most people, planning a funeral is a very rare occurrence, which means that when it's your turn, many questions can arise about how to proceed. Particularly when it comes to how long a funeral is meant to take place after death.

If you are going through the process for the first time or are curious to learn ahead of time, don't worry. We'll cover everything you need to know in today's blog.

How long after death is a funeral held?

There isn't a set number by custom or law on how long after a departure a funeral will take place; after all, the entire funeral process is a very personal question that is up to each family to decide on.

How long can you wait?

If for whatever reason, you need to take some time before you are ready for the funeral process, you'll need to consider how long you can wait without any negative consequences.

So in broad terms, if you need to take longer than a week due to personal circumstances or because you are waiting for people from abroad, this is, of course, completely possible. But it would help if you started planning everything as soon as possible to ensure all expenses and invitations are covered.

Don't confuse a funeral and cremation.

Something you should keep in mind when planning a funeral is that the cremation and the funeral service are not the same.  Cremation can be done ahead of the funeral service itself, saving both time and money for you.

A funeral is an event in which people gather together to say their goodbyes to someone that left us, but there's no rule saying that a Cremation has to happen at the same time as the funeral. Most cremations are held before the funeral, making it much easier to organize dates.

That means that if you need to wait over a month before all the guests are available, you can still go with the cremation first and have the event itself on another date.
